August 9th, 2008, the NewArt School was at Hunsucker Park in the town of Catawba to introduce ourselves to the community. This 'Art in the Park' was a chance for the community to participate in arts programming on a casual basis. We offered two different types of visual arts activities, taught by Melissa Crosson and Sigrid Hice, as well as pottery instruction by Ben Allman and guitar lessons (with guitars provided!) by Bobby Steadman. |

Kurt Sutton became Mark Twain at 8:00 pm Friday September 5th, offering quips, speeches and even banjo music in the vein of the beloved American author at the Newton-Conover Civic and Performance Place. Tickets were $10 with the proceeds benefiting both the Auditorium and the Friends of Catawba County Library.
Sutton has portrayed the author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, for 30 years and took a real interest in the author during his college days at the University of Georgia. Since then, he has taken up the harmonica, guitar and banjo to authenticate his portrayal of the American icon. He was one of the 37 national winners cited by the National Endowment for the Humanities for his Mark Twain portrayal associated with a BIG Read event in Cherokee County, Georgia.
